Field Driving Instructor (FDI)                                   


COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Historically more police officers are killed and injured every year because of vehicle crashes and driving related incidents than by any other means.  This course is the basic certification for students to become Field Driving Instructors to assist the Pennsylvania State Police Driver Training Program.  The Field Driving Instructor Program is utilized assist the Bureau of Training and Education in conducting Driver Training for both Cadets and In-Service personnel.  The program will also will utilize Field Driving Instructors to assist the Driver Training Coordinator with accessing and evaluating problem drivers in the field.   The FDI Training Course will equip the student with the basic skills, techniques, operational principles, legal considerations and instructional methodologies to assist and teach the current driver training program to members of the Department. The student will be exposed to a variety of courses designed specifically for the Pennsylvania State Police Trooper.  These courses will provide fundamental and basic skills which will enhance the instructor's driving ability and teaching proficiency. Classroom instruction and practical exercises are used during the training. At the completion of the program, students will be certified as PSP Field Driving Instructors and will have achieved levels of competency in emergency vehicle operations that will enable them to successfully evaluate and facilitate the PSP driver training program. 

INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS:  10 Days/80 Hours -  5 days, 40 hours for Instruction, and 5 days 40 hours, for a teach back with a Cadet Driving Week.

  • Defensive Driving.
  • Commentary Driving.
  • Vehicle Dynamics.
  • Electronic Stability Control.
  • Pursuit Termination.
  • Precision Immobilization Technique.
  • Non-Emergency Vehicle Operations.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations.
  • Pursuit and Civil Liability.
  • Night Emergency Driving.
  • Scoring, explaining and remediating the NEVO, Precision Cone Course, PIT, Night Emergency Response, Pursuit Course and Road Test.
  • Below 100 program.
  • Distracted Driving.

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:  Students must achieve an 85% on all scored exercises and complete the second week of student instruction to obtain the certification.
