Ground Defense II

Course Description:  This course is designed to provide the students with skills and techniques necessary to control combative subjects while in both standing and grounded postures.  The course will emphasize defense against life threatening assaults through the use of strikes, joint locks, and vascular restraint techniques.  This class will also address justification and Department policy associated with tactics introduced throughout the training.

Due to the physical nature of this training, students must evaluate and consider their own fitness level prior to enrolling in this class.

Equipment Needed:  The students may be required to perform several of the drills and exercises associated with this course while dressed in patrol related equipment.

  • Athletic clothing and footwear.
  • BDU type trousers.
  • Issued duty belt and keepers.
  • Mouthpiece.
  • Groin protection.
  • Soft body armor.

Instructional Hours:  4 Days/24 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, the student will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to defend and overcome a subject's active resistance in physical altercation.

The following topics/techniques will be addressed throughout the course:

  • Department policy/justification associated with joint locks and vascular restraint.
  • Defense/control techniques upon a standing assailant.
  • Takedown of a combative subject.
  • Defense/control techniques upon a grounded assailant.
  • Vascular restraint upon a combative subject.
  • Joint locks upon a combative subject.
  • Handcuff techniques upon a grounded assailant.

Course Completion Requirements:  Attendance and successfully demonstrate a minimum of five of the above techniques.

Audience:  PSP Enlisted, LCE, LEO, MCEO, MP

Pre-requisite(s):  Students must complete Ground Defense I prior to enrolling in this course.
