Hostage Officer Survival

Course Description:  The goal of this course is to introduce the police officer to the remote possibility of becoming a hostage as a police officer and the tactics and attitude that the officer will need to overcome and regain control of the situation.  It is comprised of both classroom instruction with case study and the review of escape and control tactics in physical training scenarios.  This course will teach a police officer how to best employ tactical thinking and understand how reaction time and employing a specific set of skills can distract and disable their hostage taker.

Due to the physical nature of this course, students should evaluate their physical conditioning.

Equipment Needed: 

  • Appropriate gym attire is required for the tactical review.
  • Students must bring own handcuffs and carried keys.

Instructional Hours:  2 Days/16 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  After completion, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the circumstances that usually lead to an officer being taken hostage in given situations.
  • Recognize the importance of proper planning prior to any incident.
  • Understand the importance of being more observant on and off duty in public areas that are more likely to be the subject of criminal activity.
  • Understand the potential of suspects to take advantage of an officer under close, tense circumstances.
  • Understand how poor restraint and searching of a suspect can lead to the officer becoming a victim of assault of a hostage.
  • Understand how "survival mentality" factors into regaining control of the hostage taker.
  • Understand how certain techniques and tactics when employed at the right moment can allow the officer to take control of the suspect's weapon and then capture the hostage taker.
  • Recognize the differences between opportunities to escape and gaining control.
  • Understand that there are certain times during the hostage event that are more conducive to regaining control or escaping.
  • Understand the importance of weapon retention and weapon disarming skills.
  • Recognize reaction time principle and how to take advantage of the same to regain control.
  • Understand what not to do to prevent escalating hostage situation.

Course Completion Requirements:  Attendance and successfully demonstrate proper survival escape technique from a restraint of their choosing (handcuffs, tape, rope, etc.).
