Introduction to Wildlife Law and Wildlife Law Enforcement

Course Description:  The course will provide a brief history of wildlife law in Pennsylvania and the mission of the Pennsylvania Game Commission as the agency responsible for managing wildlife and regulating sport hunting.   It discusses the role of the Wildlife Conservation Officer as the local agency representative.  The course will review selected sections of Title 34 (The Game and Wildlife Code) and Title 58 PA Code (Regulations), and police authority to enforce this statute and regulations, focusing on the most common and most important offenses.  The course further discusses common wildlife related incidents and how we handle them such as injured wildlife, wildlife disease issues, wildlife/human conflicts, and hunting related issues and hunter/citizen conflicts.  Overall, the course focuses on the issues police are most likely to encounter in the course of their regular duties, or for which police are likely to receive the first call, and how police response can assist us. 

This course is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  Instructors will be from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Instructional Hours:  1 Day/6 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, the participant will have a basic understanding of the PA Game Commission’s mission and local operations, the laws and regulations relevant to the management of wildlife and of sport hunting in Pennsylvania and their authority to enforce them.  They will learn preferred methods of handling Title 34 or Title 58 offenses and other common issues related to wildlife.  They will learn how to contact the PGC for assistance and the resources the agency has available to help them.

Course Completion Requirements:  Attendance and successfully pass (75% or above) a written examination.
