National Child Passenger Safety Certification

Course Description: This course is designed to give the student the skills and expertise to provide parents and caregivers education and hands-on assistance as certified child passenger safety technicians.  CPS Technicians will learn the proper procedures for the safe installation of child passenger safety seats.  They will put their knowledge to work by conducting child safety seat checks, where parents and caregivers receive hands-on assistance for proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.  This is a national course and certification will be received through Safe Kids. 
Instructional Hours:  4 Days/32 Hours
Instructional Objectives: 
After completion, the student will be able to:
  • Explain BEST PRACTICE to Parents and Caregivers when it comes to installation.
  • Explain and demonstrate the various types of seat belt systems.  
  • Explain and demonstrate the proper installation of various types of car seats/booster seats. 
  • Explain the proper procedures for transitioning to different seats as the child gets older.  
  • Explain the procedures for car seat usage in different types of emergency vehicles. 
  • Set-up and hold a car seat check event.   
  • Ensure recertification every 2 years in order to keep certification current.   

Course Completion Requirements:  Attendance and successful completion of a 3-question knowledge check, as well as 3 hands on still tests.

Audience:  PSP Enlisted – This course is grant funded and only Members are currently approved to attend.
