Officer Safety and Extremism
LECTURE DESCRIPTION: This one-day lecture is designed to increase officer situational awareness so that they can better apply the officer safety techniques and procedures they have already learned in situations involving encounters with extremists. It 1) explores the different reasons why ideological extremists can sometimes pose officer safety risks; 2) provides a quick overview of the main extremist movements (both right-wing & left-wing) with a recent history of officer-safety related issues; 3) outlines those situations involving extremists that pose a particular officer safety risk; and 4) provides a few basic defusing techniques designed to help specifically with sovereign citizen encounters.
This lecture is being presented by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL is the country's most respected private authority on extremism, terrorism and hate crimes, and the leading nongovernmental trainer of American law enforcement on topics ranging from fighting extremism to building relationships with the communities they serve.
