PSP Firearms Instructor Recertification Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Members attending this class will receive updated instruction on the Department's firearms qualification and familiarization courses, proper range procedures, as well as best practices regarding weapon handling and tactics.  This training will be mandatory for all current firearms instructors who attended a Department Firearms Instructor course more than 3 years ago to date.  This course will have a 3-year recertification cycle, requiring members to attend on a regular basis.  Those members who assumed firearms instructor duties more than 3 years ago to date who do not wish to attend, will no longer be certified as a Department Firearms Instructor.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

  • Appropriate attire for the firing range.
  • Issued Sig Sauer P227 Pistol, with weapon light and three magazines.
  • Complete set of issued duty gear with four keepers.
  • Remington Model 870P shotgun.
  • Department patrol rifle.
  • Department issued flashlight (members are encouraged to also bring a smaller personal flashlight).
  • Cleaning equipment for both pistol and shotgun.
  • Baseball-style cap.
  • Soft-body armor.
  • Raincoat and cruiser jacket.
  • Safety goggles.
  • Ear protection.
  • Ammunition:  All ammunition will be provided by the Academy or the Training Center hosting the course.

INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS:  2 Days / 16 Hours

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss current trends or issues in Department Firearms Training
  • Review Department procedures for Firearm related paperwork
  • Review Firearm Safety Rules
  • Discuss and develop REAP (range emergency action plans)
  • Participate and oversee live fire events on the range such as mock qualifications, TCS Drills, etc.
  • Explain methodology of shot time use and demonstrate same
  • Explain and review principles of marksmanship
  • Discuss common shooting errors and their corresponding remediations
  • Demonstrate skill teach backs using the tell show do protocol

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:  Attendance and Members are required to score 85% or higher on the Department's Pistol Combat Course (255/300), Shotgun Combat Course (85/100), 90% or higher on the Department Rifle Combat Course (90/135), and Dim-Light Combat Course (153/180) to be recertified as a department Firearms Instructor (FI).
