Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) is an approved Pursuit Termination Technique by the Pennsylvania State Police to safely end vehicular pursuits. Motor vehicle pursuit is one of the high-risk activities for Law Enforcement Officers. The Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) was developed to reduce the risks associated with motor vehicle pursuits. This technique is typically used by Law Enforcement Officers as a safer alternative to continue a dangerous motor vehicle pursuit. The PIT maneuver has been effective because vehicle mechanics and physics make the outcome reasonably predictable This course is the basic certification for students to become certified in performing the PIT maneuver. The student will receive both classroom and hands on training in the use of the PIT maneuver. The PIT Training Course will equip the student with the basic skills, techniques, operational principles, legal considerations and instructional methodologies to safely and correctly perform the PIT maneuver in the field. This course will also address the behavior of vehicles involved in this maneuver, discuss vehicle process for the pre-impact, impact, and post-impact stages. To successfully complete of this training, the student must attend all sessions and successfully demonstrate the skills taught in practical application of the PIT maneuver.

INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS: 1 Day / 8 Hours
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: After completion, the student will be able to understand and successfully demonstrate and have knowledge of:
- Field Regulations 6-10
- Pursuit Termination
- Identify legal responsibilities and liabilities associated with the use of a pursuit termination technique.
- Identify the decision-making criteria necessary for the use of pursuit termination technique
- Proper placement of vehicle during a PIT maneuver
- Precision Immobilization Technique
- Pursuit and Civil Liability relating to pursuit termination
- Proper vehicle placement and tactics at conclusion of a successful PIT Maneuver
