Sobriety Checkpoints Supervisory Training

Course Description:  This one-day course is designed to acclimate officers designated as Sobriety Checkpoint Supervisors with a myriad of issues involved with Sobriety Checkpoints as well as Regulatory Checkpoints, it reviews Vehicle Code Provisions, relating to Sobriety Checkpoints and DUI Enforcement. The curriculum delves into the Constitutional issues of Sobriety Checkpoints as well as Regulatory Checkpoints at the State and National levels.  The course instructs Supervisors on site selections as well as equipment and manpower needs. The attendees will be required to participate in a mock sobriety checkpoint to become familiarized with the diversity of the equipment used in the checkpoint operation (mock checkpoint is held outdoors).

Instructional Hours:  1 Day/8 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  After the completion of this class students will be able to:
  • Understanding statistical gathering, setup, and managing of Regulatory and Sobriety Checkpoints.
  • Explain law enforcement's role in checkpoints and enforcement.
  • Understand the current DUI case law and legal environment.

Course Completion Requirements: Attendance and successful completion of a knowledge check.

Audience: PSP Enlisted, MP

Prerequisite(s):  For PSP Enlisted: rank of Corporal (supervisor) or above.
