Vehicle Based Firearms Techniques​

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed for law enforcement officers who operate and encounter vehicles in the course of their daily duties and may have the need to engage subjects using rifles and pistols from non-typical positions in and around vehicles.  This course involves shooting in, from, around, and under vehicles.

EQUIPMENT:  General range safety gear; weather appropriate clothing; law enforcement patrol rifle with sling, 1500 rounds of ammunition, and at least three, 30-round magazines; pistol with strong side holster, 500 rounds of ammunition, and at least three magazines; weapon maintenance gear; elbow and knee pads are highly recommended.  Ballistic vest; hard armor is at the discretion of the participant.  *PSP Members will be issued all necessary ammunition at the training venue.

INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS:  3 Days/24 Hours

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this course, trainees will have been instructed in, and should finish the course have a working knowledge of the following concepts: 

    • 100% round accountability;
    • Weapon handling safety;  
    • Confirming rifle and pistol zero;
    • Recognizing and overcoming optic/muzzle offset;
    • Driving the gun to multiple targets and varied points;
    • Non-typical barricade and vehicle shooting;
    • Shooting while moving;
    • Support side shooting and transitioning;
    • Adapting to multiple positions in, around and under vehicles;
    • Transitioning to the pistol and back to the rifle as needs and engagements dictate
    • One and two-person drills to simulate fighting from and around vehicles

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:  Attendance of all training session hours.  Students will receive a certificate if they satisfactorily perform in the above listed proficiencies.  There is a 10-question knowledge check. 

AUDIENCE:  PSP Enlisted; MP

PREREQUISITE(S):  PSP Tactical Carbine for the Responding Officer or equivalent.  (Equivalency status based on a general knowledge of the enrolled trainee.  For example, a member of PSP SERT would be exempt from the prerequisite.  A municipal officer who is known to PSP Staff as a competent weapon handler would be exempt on a case-by-case basis).
