Vehicle Stop Tactics

Course Description:  This course deals with unknown risk vehicle stops, high-risk stops, and nighttime stops.  The program includes: practical exercises in stopping vehicles, responding to emergencies, officer down drills, and handling of firearms.  In addition, alternate vehicle stop techniques will be discussed.  The student will also be trained in assessment of risks and threat cues by drivers and passengers; safe positioning of police and violator vehicles; safe methods for approaching vehicles and making contact with driver/passenger; how to stop and approach vehicles other than passenger cars; case law regarding vehicle stops; safe methods for conducting "felony," or high-risk stops.  There will be a variety of scenario's in which the student will be required to make split-second "shoot, no shoot" decisions.  There will be live simunitions used throughout the training. Head and neck protection will be provided.
 
Equipment Needed:
  • Participants shall bring:
    • Groin protector.
    • Soft-body armor.
    • Flashlight.
    • Duty-belt with related equipment.
    • Long sleeve shirts are highly recommended.

Instructional Hours:  2 Days/16 Hours

Instructional Objectives:  To give Patrol Officers the tactics and know-how needed to safely conduct traffic stops and train the tactics needed for survival when an encounter becomes deadly.  To also familiarize the student with the "Objective Reasonableness Standard" based on what actions they take in a deadly encounter.

Course Completion Requirements:  Attendance and successful completion of a 5-question knowledge check.
