Warm Weather Woodland Survival


Course Description:  This course is designed to educate Pennsylvania Law Enforcement in becoming familiar with basic survival equipment and techniques during warm weather conditions.  This course will utilize both classroom lecture and outdoor practical exercises that each student will perform.  The course will require the student to spend a night in a survival situation while utilizing shelter building skills, fire building skills, and navigation skills.
Each Course limited to 16 students.  Due to the physical nature of this course student should evaluate their physical conditioning.

Instructional Hours:  3 Days / 24 Hours

Instructional Objectives: To develop an understanding of basic survival decisions and to remain safe until they are able to self-rescue or are found by searchers.  Be able to develop their own personal emergency survival kit and learn what items are essential for survival situations in Pennsylvania.   

After completion, the student will be able to:
1. Calculate their pace for distance determination in land navigation.
2. Determine direction.
3. Demonstrate how to start a fire with only methods and materials shown.
4. Construct a shelter using materials provided and natural materials that are available.
5. Identify warm weather injuries and proper treatment.
6. Demonstrate and use different types of rescue signals

Lodging and Meals:  Lodging will be available at the Pennsylvania Game Commission Training Academy 2001 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg Pa 17110. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided, student are responsible for dinner.

Equipment Needed:
BDU Pants (Black for PSP)
Uniform Shirt
Patrol Boots
Ballistic Vest
Duty Belt with weapon
Jacket (Cruiser)

Class Schedule:
Day 1 -   0800-1600 - Classroom at RLSC - Lunch on your own.
               Lodging is available at RLSC - Dinner on your own.
Day 2 -  Travel to field location (bivouac site)
              0700-1500 – field practice - Lunch provided.  
              500-2300 – “off duty.” 
Day 3 -  Report back to bivouac site by 2300.
              Return to RLSC by 0600.          
              0600-0700 - debrief/wrap-up/dismissal.


Additional Information:  This course is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Instructors will be from the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
